Can we adjust the registration process at all?

When I signed up my "new" profile it first showed me 4 animals and asked me to select the one that was a cat, then it also had the random number and letter combo thing on the next screen.

Either that or perhaps we need to have all new members be pending until approved. It would be a step for mods to have to do, but right now we're having to go through and delete people who are slipping through anyway.

Nick, if you want to set that up, be my guest. Just make sure that it mails all of us so that nobody legitimate is kept waiting for too long!

Er, I'll see what I can work out, but considering I've been a user of AdminCP for 24 hours I'm still working on figuring how it works.

I think the "captcha" approach is one we should try before lumbering the admins with extra work.

Google it and take your choice.

We have that in place though, I had to go through it yesterday when I created my new alias.

So either someone has character recognition software that is beating it, or someone has got people manually doing this.

Yes. We moderate, we don't "judge" per say. Not so much Big Brother as a filter for relevant info (and yes, what Chopper adds is relevant!).

Until he goes off on a rant telling us about the wonders of Cialis at 70 years old, than I wouldn't bat an eye.

Even changing his avatar would be a little daft; maybe save it for April Fools day???

Messing with the profiles of legitimate users should be off-limits. I used to be a member of a forum where usernames, avatars and titles could be changed by other users for money, and it was absolute chaos. I don't really approve of what Robbie did to Nick's profile (yes, yes, even though I did the same to Robbie in revenge for Nick), and would hope that it won't be repeated on this site - even as a joke.

Whatever chopper's defects (and we all have them), I think he is a valuable member of the forum. Right or wrong, he presents a different perspective. I would not want to drive him away or treat him unfairly.

Oh I agree completely, I think he's very good value indeed. Sometimes he can be a bit like the mad drunk in the corner of the pub, but he's actually got a very keen insight into the sport, and he's reveling in his role as the fan who keeps us refs in check.

Wow. Is it wrong that I'm glad Chopper can't read these compliments?

Kidding - he is a useful contributor, and certainly keeps us on our toes.

However, I reiterate my point that messing with user profiles constitutes abuse of admin rights. Please don't anyone be tempted!

In other news, today I have deleted just two spam users and their threads. Yesterday, I deleted more than 50 threads and at least 10 users. Well done guys!

Well yesterday it was the russians sending us loads of porn, today it appears to be Italians.

Thankfully I was not using my work laptop to clear these threads out, no "click here" required, they had filled the posts themselves with lots and lots of hardcore porn!

Go to their user profile, find the link that says "Give Infraction". Infractions have a set number of points; 12 results in a permanent ban, so select one of the 12-pointers.

Holler if you have problems.
