I have never heard the word 'falcon' being used in this context. Is it an Australian thing?

It started off a few years ago on "The Footy Show" a humorous Aussie rugby league show.

In his playing days, presenter Mario Fenech had something of a reputation for having his head get in the way of the ball, so his weekly segment of the show was introduced with footage of the ball being passed into his head. Fenech's nickname is The Maltese Falcon (referencing Fenech's Maltese descent and the Humphrey Bogart movie of the same name) and so some wag on the show decided that the 'Golden Falcon Award' would be awarded to players whose head came into contact with the ball in RL matches. The term was shortened to 'Falcon' and entered Australian vernacular. Since NZ has a team in the NRL (The Warriors) and all the Aussie RL shows are broadcast on NZ TV, term also entered the vernacular here.
