A scrum is awarded on the 5 meter. Are the defending team still required to drop the 5 Meters behind the back foot or is the offside line the try line?

I would be like saying if there was a penalty 5m out would everyone have to be 5m behind goals. No because you could just run in a try.

Try line is offside line.

The ELV offside law change from back foot of scrum to 5m, does not change the rest of the Laws which apply.

The goal (try) line is not overtly mentioned in Law 20 Scrum, but the references you should look at are 22.4 (c) and 22.6, which state that a scrum or ruck cannot take place in-goal, so the goal line is the offside line by default.

This interpretation was confirmed at various RFU ELV workshops in July/August 2008.

Excellent! A new recruit to the Rugbyrefs.com pedantry society! Keep 'em coming. I see we still have a "looser" emoticon available.

I see nothing wrong with the spelling in this thread's subject.

The reason I raised this thread, is because since the start of this season I have played in more than one match where the offical has insisted on the 5. I am grateful for the clarification as I was starting to think I had misinterpretated the ELV.

never ever call me English - we are Celtic cousins ! Just because I live amongst the Anglo-Saxons, and am forced to speak their language, and have their flag on my profile as I am a member of an English Referees Society, you make an incorrect assumption.

You have their flag - your Society Crescent would say enough but your a Welsh (I assume) referee just doing it in England. Highly misleading!!!
