Having seen the pictures, I would have called Scotland black and got on with it.

Yes, if the alternative was sending out to borrow kit, or turning RWC shirts inside out etc.

but what if you happened to know that one of the teams actually had brought their change kit with them and had it in the changing room? If that was the case I would definitely have asked them to wear it

Ice hockey sorts this out by each team having two strips: "home" colours (predominantly a solid colour) and "away" colours (predominantly white, with flashes of your preferred colour).
Since every match has a deemed home and away side (even at something akin the RWC) it's always clear in advance what strip each side should wear.
And if rugby did something similar the ref would know in the colours in advance and could wear a contrasting colour.

Rugby of course already has all of this at these levels. It even typically has them at grassroots levels, and sensibly takes the approach of the home team changing strips when a clash occurs as they are the team that doesn't have to TRAVEL with two strips.


But at these elite levels it seems beyond the comprehension of those in charge that this can be done.
