While the scrum isn't specifically forbidden from making contact with the posts, I'm can't help feeling I'd have blown up before it got that far...

Was the ref even looking where the scrum was heading though?

They must have been really rusty at the bottom and ready to be replaced anyway.

Only a few years old. New pitch/ground. Only as long as Hinckley have been in the National League 2 recently. More do with construction and fixing in ground. (Not deep enough?)

if there hadn't been an adjacent pitch, could the game have been finished? All shots at goal at the other end?

Not without removing the post and crossbar that fell down and the one post that was still standing. I think otherwise it would be unsafe to play.

A more general question; can you play a game of rugby with only one set of posts? I think the answer is yes. Not ideal obviously, but it wouldn't make me stop 40 odd players who wanted to play a game.

that is in line with what I was thinking.

Penalty shots at the one set of goal posts would be interesting.

And the teams would have to agree that drop goals are not on

You would have to say no PK for goals, else you would have to change ends completely for a shot at goal (they don't necessarily go dead !)

I've refereed a match where there was only one set of posts (debut match for a new collegiate side). Didn't think of issues involving PKs and drops, since I've seen 1 successful DG from open play and had one match where both teams would take 3 from a PK. Ended up not mattering, as it was one way traffic.
