Sent a player off for "trampling" or casually walking over an opponent back in February. On his way off, shouting things like "You're a f*cking cheat ref" and physically slapped me 3 times on the cheek. (Not hard, but not softly either).

Heard the result today...

48 week ban.

And so he should be banned. 48 weeks, sounds about right!

You're happy with 48 weeks?

Should have been a lifetime ban in my opinion.

48 weeks is in the right direction. It's a minimum, I would say.

Slaps?! Did he get his sports mixed up?

I thought hitting a ref was life and then work their way back from there depending on factors?

Im assuming this was an underage player (your last two articles involve you refereeing U14 and U16). If so that will probably have played a part.

Also any disciplinary hearing now seems to have prior good behaviour as a mitigating circumstance. A younger player is unlikely to have many if any disciplinary problems. This is another factor.

Also for me there is a difference between a hard punch which causes serious injury to the referee and a slap which the referee describes as medium.

With those to consider I would say its unlikely a player will be told he cant play rugby again for the rest of his life. I would have though it would have been slightly longer however.

This was a senior 2nd XV player.

I have since been told it was his first game back from injury and he is usually a first XV player, was just "having a run out" for the 2nd's before going back in to the first team.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Well he will have another season off to get back to fitness now.

Assume he was trying to give you a patronising, arrogant tap not actually hit you.
A year out seems fair to me given that a few years ago montgomery pushed a ref over and got less than that.
Well done Al

Hmmmmmm.....would I trade my refereeing career for a bit of retaliation!

Maybe.

He certainly wouldn't have got past the first slap!

Does "off season" count as part of a ban. It shouldn't.

if he has slapped you in the face, then 48 weeks is a shocker!!!!!

Its a lifetime ban FFS!!! And the police would be informed.

I would have tolerated one slap then if he tried a second one, i would unleash the guns on him (in self defence using what i deemed necessary at the time your honour ;) )

Was it an Eric Morecambe type of slap?
Or a Brian Moore gay slap?

How can we second guess the situation?
