Just perusing the Law Book to clarify one law, when I came across this;

21.6 SCORING FROM A FREE KICK
(a) A goal cannot be scored from a free kick.
(b) The team awarded a free kick cannot score a dropped goal until after the ball next becomes dead, or until after an opponent has played or touched it, or has tackled the ball carrier. This restriction applies also to a scrum taken instead of a free kick.

Under section B, if a team opts for the scrum at say the 5m line, then this reads that they cannot win the scrum and pass back for a drop goal (unless a tackle occurs). Is this right???(now the title does say senior moment). The push over try would be fine.

Why Pandora's box? Unlike some laws I could mention, I cannot see any grey area or ambiguity. Must be missing something here!

A chopper.

Ah yes, I see now. Fair point.

Is there a sanction or is it play on as if the posts were invisible?

play on as if posts didn't exist

That'll take some selling on the pitch if the kick goes through and everyone's expecting a whistle. I reckon they would all stop dead expecting the goal to be awarded.

in which case the ball will go dead and you can award a scrum-back

the problem will be if the catch the ball and counter-attack, then you'll undoubtedly have some players playing while others have stopped.

Manage it.

Absolutely. Quick shout of illegal kick and play on if the ball doesnt go dead. There will still be scratching of heads though.

Manage it - as soon as he kicks it give a loud call of "Direct from scrum, drop kick can't score. PLAY ON".

if players stop that is there problem - age old edict is play to the whistle. It could be a hard lesson to be learnt !

Or you could always do what I did and award the score

I did find out afterwards I had dropped one.

I'm not sure "illegal kick" would be helpful - the defending side might stop and expect a penalty.

"Play on" has to be it.

it's not an illegal kick, though.
it's not illegal to kick the ball, it justdoesn't count as a goal.
Legally, it's exactly as if they punted the ball up field and it went through the posts

but in practice more of a management challenge :)

it fact it might be an interesting ploy
- when awarded a FK close to opponents posts
- take the FK as a DK, trying to float it very high so that it goes through or close to posts, lands in goal
- follow up the kick very hard
- aim to create confusion amongst defenders and collect the ball and score a try

it would be fun!

Don't worry - I did it in a National League game and only realised I'd messed up when someone from on here picked me up on it!

Drop goal as described is not allowed. Loud: "Play on! Play on! - No Goal!" Try the old widespread arms as well.

Pushover try is fine, as is any other try, the law doesn't say you can't score from a FK, just that you can't score a drop goal.

I would mention the no drop goal law when the captain makes the call.

if that's the case, and it's as if the posts didn't exist..wouldn't the drop out /scrum option as per 22.8 be the possibilities for the non-offending team?
