I wonder why the ban lengths were so different.

Presumably because : "‘the performance reviewer advised the referee that he should include within his report an allegation that the player had sworn at him." So the reviewer and not the referee initiated the offence.

However, the massive disparity is odd.

While this case obviously highlights the referee's stupidity (and the assessor's), it is also a reminder to keep all conversations professional until the microphone is off, and indeed anywhere at the ground where you can be overheard.

Or why not just be honest and truthful? Of course, "professional" at all times as well!

This is complete and total speculation since I do not know any of the details, but:

Imagine a very experienced and respected assessor and a young, or inexperienced, or both, referee. The panel in such a case may well think that the adviser used his experience and standing to bring a large amount of pressure onto the referee, who might not have felt able to challenge such an experienced, respected figure.

I would say that is probably the reasoning behind the bans. However, the bans given to both seems far to light. The Advisor, for me should be banned for longer and the referee for a season. In fact I'm tempted to say a life ban for the advisor.

Of course as you imply there could be unknown factors that make my conclusion wrong.

makes you wonder how often similar conversations have taken place where the microphone hasn't been forgotten to be turned off

Just what I was thinking.

You would have to be pretty naiive to think that this is the only time it has happened AND it just happened to be caught on tape.

It's a bit like how on Highway Patrol / Motorway Cops / RBT and similar shows, everyone who gets caught drink driving was doing it for the first time ever!

Why did the referee change the Yellow Card to Red? Is it claimed that at the time he was advised to do so by the assessor? I know a Team of Three can all talk to each other, but why would an assessor need to be able to talk to a referee?

I understand that our trainee level 1/ 2 refs are often on two way comms. That way the Advisor can "help" during the game. I have not experienced it, so can't comment on its effectiveness.

It could be that this is what was happening.

Wow. That sounds like an awful idea. I'm not even a fan of advisors / assessors speaking at HT unless there is a player safety issue.

Presumably the pair were hooked up to the team recording of the match, hence the reason this came to light? If so, this is unusual as normally one is given a separate radio for such a purpose.
