There seems to be a widespread trend in rugby where the referees who do the first round of a finals series, don't get a game in the second round. I've looked all the way back to 2007 in super rugby and this has happened every year.

I would have thought come finals time, you pick your best referees for the weekend, and assuming they do a good job, they come back next weekend. Joubert and Walsh did the qualifiers last weekend, and Peyper and Jackson are doing the semis this weekend. I don't get it - pick your two best referees, don't go trying to share it around at such a crucial time of year.

What if your two best referees...are actually your four best referees?

Well, I'd vote for you.
Unfortunately I have been narrowly beaten by CJ, with Steve Walsh and James Leckie to run touch.

This brings me back to my previous point - CJ was clearly the best referee and should have reffed one of the semi-finals too.

you have to balance development against having the best referee for every single game ...

When it comes to finals, you should have the best ref for every single game IMO. There's plenty of games throughout the season that are of a fair amount of importance which can be used for the up and comers.

you need a small panel of refs that you trust with finals.
how can refs get on to that panel, except by refereeing semi-finals?

They get their turn when they're in the top 2 in the regular season. Simple.

So what, you're going to chuck someone into pressure orders of magnitude beyond what they've experienced before, and just hope they don't have a brainfart?

No matter how you slice it, a referee doing a semi-final or a final has to do one for the first time.

Sure, but there's a difference between gradually introducing someone to heightened levels of competition, and just going "welp, you had a good year, enjoy the grand final, bring it back mint and don't wrap it round a tree".

Referee: Craig Joubert
AR: Steve Walsh
AR: James Leckie
TMO: George Ayoub (I think that's how you spell George's last name)

Out of curiousity, does anyone have a problem with 3 Aussie's being appointed to the game?
