Sorry for asking so many questions but I have just found these forums and am hoping they will answer everything I need to know.

The referee in the world cup final has come under a lot of stick in the press and in the clubs, but I have also heard a lot of people defending him? did he actually have a bad game, or is it just moaning becuse England almost lost?

After looking at this in one of our mettings it was decided that he actually had a good game and that his decisions were justified, easy to say from a Scotsmans point of view, and most English Refs will now say the same, wonder if it would be the same had England lost

If we are refering to the England final and Andre Watson I would comment as follows;
He had a good game generally, I felt our pack were pushing him to the limit and he finally decided to assert his authority, which is what any ref would do under pressure from one side. Engand were infringing and the ref was right to come down heavily on them. With regard to th specific infamous decision deep in the opposition half to ping England in the scrum when the oppo stood up, I think this was a bad call but may have been as a result of Englland pushing their luck on a number of earlier scrums. Fundamentaly Andre is a world class ref and I defy anybody who has ref'd on a regular basis to be biased, personally I felt England got what they deserved

Like the majority of referees and spectators the best games I have ever refereed at have been from the arm chair, side of the pitch or in the stand. I was interested to see in the last 20 minutes of normal time Andre's change in communication in both verbal and signalling. Both became more hurried and indicated a person under pressure from the event and players, something I can understand but will never personally feel. I would like to think that away from the media and hype he will reflect on his actions and still with his enormous experience learn from the game. That is the real challenge we all face, we constantly learn, and if we cannot identify areas for continual improvement we will not improve.

Must be an enormous honour to be given the job of being in charge of the highest hame possible in your sport, This man has done it twice!

I think the bigger concern is not so much that he was right or wrong in his decisions, but in the fact that clearly there is so much inconsistency between referees - unless Australia's scrum was really that much weaker than georgia's or Uruguay's for example (do we really believe that?) then why weren't similar descisioons being made in such mathes with similarly weak packs.. ?
