An email that was accidentally sent to all the NHS's staff in England has caused havoc.

One of the health system's employees fired off the message on Monday morning without realising they had copied in 840,000 of their co-workers.

The action quickly clogged up the system and was exacerbated by users hitting "reply all" to complain.

We had an incidence of that 20 years ago at Arthur Andersen. Someone sent an email to the world, then people "replied to all" asking to be removed from the distribution. In the end, the CEO sent out a very strongly worded message to say that the next "reply to all" would be a disciplinary offence as the traffic was impacting the company's global IT performance. Some idiot "replied to all" asking whether the CEO's email contradicted his own advice. He was terminated forthwith.

What struck me is that only 54 people asked to be removed ... from a list of 840,000.

That's just 0.0064% of the recipients. Presumably the other 99.9936% are happily drowning in e-mails.

I'm guessing they "deleted without reading"
