We had these varients in tournaments a few years ago, it was impossible to keep up with them as you would ref different age levels each week.
Our secretary stated that if you are a branch appointment then you ref to irfu rules, no varients allowed. Made life a lot simpler.

I completely agree with your secretary's policy.

it's another reason not to have tournament rules - many tournaments have a mixture of club and society-appointed refs, and you raise the spectre of them reffing to different Laws.

moral of all this: no special tournament Laws. it's hard enough getting consistency with the real laws.

Didds - yes it is a tap tackle. Had to work this out on my last jaunt to France. Took a lot of explaining on both sides to confirm it!

In Underage Rugby here in France, up to and including under 13, the tackle law is as follows :

The tackle must be made using both arms and must be at waist level. Any contact above this will be penalised.

How can this possibly help develop future Elite players?? Ditch this silly Idea & get them started on shoulder smashing through the neck throat area asap, otherwise they'll never become a quality professional !!! :sarc:

Hi Browner,
Joking aside the gap between French underage sides and their "Isles of the North" counterparts is widening fast. I'm afraid that the Nationwide Insurance company (who shall remain nameless) has the FFR by the "proverbials". It was a case of either the FFR apply the sweeping changes or the aforementioned "nameless" insurer would take measures to have Rugby classed as a dangerous sport (over here), along side Hot-air Ballooning, Motor Sport, Rock Climbing, Underwater Diving, Parachuting, Caving & the like. The implications were that it would become affordable only to a certain social class of people. Rather than let things go full circle, the FFR gave in to the demands.
Ah - the old spoon tackle. Not often seen over here.
Can't sneek cutlery (or anything) past English refs these days, can you?
