So in answer to the original post, the Europe Court ruled that it's fine for our hypothetical woman referee to wear a face covering.

post script : All the court said was that the French government had the right to fine this individual for not respecting the law in this country. No other conclusions can be drawn from the ruling. How it may be used as a precedent remains unclear, despite alot of folks currently bandying it about like some sort of moral victory.

skiing is an interesting one - when it's cold many people would say that skiing absolutely requires a face covering, lest their face freezes. But on that same day cold will be other people skiing with bare faces

Speaking of Muslim(?) ladies and skiing I seem to remember bit of hoohah over a Lebanese skier in the Sochi Olympics who didn't wear a niqab (or anything else) on the slopes!

Nude Lebanese skiing at an Olympics? Not surprised it caused a hoohah. As a lady from a warm climate in a Russian winter, I'm surprised her nip ... no, let's not even go there.
