[LAWS]4.1 ADDITIONAL ITEMS OF CLOTHING
(d) A player may wear mitts (fingerless gloves) which must conform to IRB Specifications
(Regulation 12).

Regulation 12 (d) Fingerless Mitts
Coverage of the fingers and thumbs be permitted to the outer joint but no
further
. The mitt zone of coverage should not continue beyond the wrist.
The body of the mitt should be of a stretch type material with the grip
material being made of a soft rubber/synthetic compound not exceeding a
depth of 1mm.
No part of a mitt should contain buttons or potentially dangerous items
[/LAWS]

Obviously these gloves push the boundary of "the outer joint" to the limit.
So what is the point of not allowing the tips of the fingers to be covered?
Is this regulation out of date?
Should it be scrapped?

if the model had longer fingers there'd be no issue. Common sense says these are fine. I have no idea why the fingertips must be kept cold - probably the same idea as outlawing tights (stop rugby becoming a game for those who are less manly than the sort of person who thinks it's sensible for a referee to wear a sleeveless shirt in sub-zero temperatures).

I was surprised to find that the law on this dates only from 1996, since I clearly remember my mother cutting the fingers of a pair of yellow woollen gloves for me when I was at school in the 1950s.

There must have been something before that. I recall wearing a pair of mitts in the early 1990's. Being a wuss, if I'd been allowed finger tips I'd have had them!

In the early 2000s there were quite a few players wearing mitts and body armour/shoulder pads. it seems like that fad has disappeared.

Yes if it wasn't for mitts Ben Kay wouldn't have scored the winning try in the World Cup Final in 2003. What?

the new fad (in all sports) is strips of brightly coloured stretchy platic tape
