I refereed on Saturday.
Great game, really competitive throughout.
Two minutes left, away team win a line out on their own 5m line but seal off at the resulting ruck.
I penalize, so home team, down by 6 points decide to tap and set up a driving maul 5m out.
The maul is moving fairly quickly towards the try line, with the ball available at the back when a defending player comes in the side and takes the maul down.
I have no hesitation in awarding a penalty try.

I am under the posts when the skipper comes running over, shouting at me that I can't award the PT as I haven't given them a previous warning and it was their first time offending.
I tell him quite firmly that I have made the decision and will discuss it with him afterwards.
He tries again, so I say exactly the same thing.
He then jumps up and down, and screams in my face "No, we will talk about it NOW!"
I issue a red card to him .

Final whistle two minutes later.

Immediately the coach is all over me, spectators are calling me a f******g cheat.
My coach escorts me off the pitch as more spectators join in

In the bar afterwards the coach really lays into me and tries to blame me fr the red card, saying I should not have engaged the skipper and have hung him out to dry.
He then tells me I am fat and not fit enough to referee. His exact words were "look at you, there is no way you are fit enough to referee at this level".
My coach had done a report and given me a 96% accuracy at the breakdown.

Just seen the clubs match report which seems to be a work of fiction
http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/huntingdonrugbyclub/s/match-centre-92849/1-758521

I have reported this to our disciplinary team.
This is the second time this year I have refereed them, and sent their coach to the stands in the first game for abusing me.
If the coach is that bad, how can he expect his players to behave differently

Have you completed a referee abuse form?
I hope you have?

Re: PT decision [only you know how controlled & certain a maul try seemed, or whether the collapse was deliberate etc ] so i'll ignore that part. Given the significance of the decision, and timing etc it's fair to expect the away capt to question vehemently. All whistlers will share your displeasure at his rant, but I think that in the context of the 'moment' I'd like to think that I would have initially walked away toward where the conversion was likely to be taken from ....... this puts the captain in a predicament...... he can a] stand & dance on the spot to himself ... or b] follow you out into middle and worsen his image via confrontation of you , ......which if he did would magnify his outburst to all watchers......... I suspect that he wouldn't have followed you, which would have allowed a brief simmer & distance moment to exist............... please don't think I excuse him, but clearly the disappointment just flew out of his gob. [LAWS] as for the coach [& supporters] No No No :nono:, this is a worrying trend in rugby, that needs to be severely discouraged by the disciplinary process ...... Cockerill & others have huge 'role model' responsibilities here. You were lucky to have such an experienced Coach/trainer at your side to support you off the pitch ............ [/LAWS] My anger resolution trainers always told me to 'buy time & distance' when faced with Mr Angry , it's nature's pressure release valve........ your report needs to be detailed, & on that note I notice you have too many *'s in F*****g !

What a disappointing thing to undure. As others say..report it as you saw it. Don't leave out the spectator abuse, and although you may not be able to cite them individually, hopefully the judiciary will hold the club responsible to do something about it.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind

1) Did you YC the player for collapsing the maul? It is dangerous play (foul play?) and therefore since you thought it worthy of a PT you must have thought it was intentional and therefore isn't a YC warranted too? If you didn't YC the collapser, then was there a reason you didn't?
[LAWS](e) A player must not intentionally collapse a maul. This is dangerous play.
Sanction: Penalty kick[/LAWS]

2) was the RC for verbal abuse, or was his actions intimidating/threatening while in your personal space more the reason for the RC?

What a disgraceful write-up!

I hope the relevant authorities for that area throw the bloody book at the captain and his club.

If that happened here, that club would find it very difficult to get association referees in the future, and I would be telling my Association not to give me any further appointments for that team for the rest of my life.

would it be worth taking screen shots of the article on the website? my club uses pitchero, and it's very easy to edit an article to remove any offending sections...

might be useful if the CB wants to use the report in their hearing.

Tough gig. Hope that you aren't too bruised by it, it can't have been nice.

The report crosses the line from 'upset at a ref's call and reporting that fact' to flat out ranting. Well done for reporting it.

What did your Coach say about the PT?

Once the dust settles I'm sure you will reflect and see if there was anything that you could differently. 2 points leapt out at me.

1. The Coach saying about your fitness - have you reported this as well?
The London Fitness coach talks about being bullet proof - he says get fit be the right shape they can't level it at you. It's advice that I've taken (and need to keep taking as witnessed by my weight loss thread!) Whilst unacceptable time and tone from the coach no doubt is it worth thinking about? As far as I know you might be Mo Farrahesq!

2. 'We'll talk about it in the bar after Skipper' This used to drive me mad as a player that's no use to me now we're getting pinged of the park we'll have lost by the time we're in the bar! Having said that I now find myself saying it when I ref! :wtf:

Anyone got any alternatives? Or do you advocate leaving it as this is what I want I need your players to comply (or another closed sentiment).

I hope that next week’s game is better than the last 2 minutes of this one

As others have mentioned, delaying a conversation entirely until you're in the bar can wind players up something rotten.

"There's no need for a warning for that skipper - number 8 collapsed the maul which prevented a try. I've got no option".

Doesn't take more than a few seconds to explain your rationale. I agree that if he wants to discuss further, then he will have to wait til after, but at least you can say "I've explained my decision - I won't debate if further here" rather than just not interacting at all.

PS - Sounds like you got the decision spot on!

I thought one of the clubs down here liked to have a pop at the ref! That's shocking, needs to be followed up by CB and society.

Think we should send Womble to ref um

Good shout, ....... i'm imagining that the away side wont produce anything that helps , but the home side might? - Derby RFC were National 3 last season so i'd bet they do video their matches ......Q is there any society protocols for obtaining a copy of videos of matches? [LAWS]the next time I've got refcam - i'm keeping it on in the bar !!:biggrin::biggrin: [/LAWS]

Club needs to be hauled over the coals for posting that sort of thing. I know it would not be tolerated here. I would hope that the judiciary would make them print a retraction and apology in the same format after they have had their bum smacked over it.
