In your pre-match chat with the captains, what are your main points for discussion ????

Mine are as Follows

1. what I expect at varying phases of the game (tackle, ruck etc)
2. what I will and will not accept in relation to Breaches of Law 10
3. Questions from Either Captain

keep it Brief, Keep it simple

No mention at all of "Crouch, Bind and Set"? :wow:

My understanding is that the scrum engagement was the one point we were expected to cover.

I think the OP refers to the time spent with the two captains together

I am much briefer
.. are you agreed on how many subs (this is important in some of the leagues I ref in)
.. please keep your teams quiet , no problem if you want to talk to me or ask me something but not at a penalty
..if there is an injury I will try to play on if we can
..let's toss the coin
.. good luck , kick off in X minutes

"15 minutes to we start. A shout at 10, then 5, then 2. At 2, we're getting ready to start. Questions through you at a time we can stop; I'm not stopping a quick tap to answer a question. Skipper, here's the coin"

Anything else is a waste of time.

perhaps the best post ever from my political nemesis. Here is my law reference in accord:

6.A.4 LIMITATION ON THE REFEREE
The referees must not give advice to either team before the match.

I used to have a lengthy pregame chat but then I noticed no one paid attention and it was just a waste of time.

Now I do four things

1 - Front row chat where I give tell them what I am looking for at scrum time (a few very brief points)
2 - Captains' chat(I'll explain a call but we aren't debating them. All communication comes through captain)
3- Coin toss
4 - Questions?

Entire chat is 1 minute

Crouch ---- I'd be looking for the front rows to be at the same height

Bind ------ I'd be looking for Long Binds up & Over onto the body as per Pre-match chat with Front rows

Set ----- Gets everybody locked in & stable before the ball is put in

Pegleg, Hope this helps

I think there is a difference between a talk to captains and the talk to the FRONT row. Now you may fo it all together. However, in Wales anyway, the FR MUST be brieffed on the CBS. The captain doew not need to be. any of us chose to do the whole brief to the entire team. But it is not a (Welsh) requirement that the captain is present during the FR brief.

So widening this to the "team brief" and looking at the OP:

1. what I expect at varying phases of the game (tackle, ruck etc) Tackle / ruck / line out / Ball on ground - no tackle .Ingoal.... Where do you stop?
2. what I will and will not accept in relation to Breaches of Law 10 What breaches do you accept?
3. Questions from Either Captain Opening it up a bit do you reall want to go there?

keep it Brief, Keep it simple

Mine is basically (slight changes depending on level of teams)

The scrum
Engagement / bind and feed

Hand up for the back 5m (S) or 10m (LO) keep back until hand down.

I tell them I'll call TACKLE / RUCK / MAUL "You know what is allowed in each area don't you!?"

Discipline belongs to each player, then the captains. If I have to take over my options are limited! (this is reitterated to the Captains just before the toss.

Questions through the captain at the next down time.

You've still not explained how that is "new" and Taff's is "old" - when you called Taff out for

No mention at all of "Crouch, Bind and Set"?

suggesting his was the old engagement? I can't see any difference.

I guess it depends slightly on the level at which you're reffing. I'm still refining what I say, but generally:
- how we're dealing with subs, as per crossref
- We'll play advantage where possible and I'll indicate that
- a quick tap at a penalty mark is the end of options, so let me know if you want an option before then
- Start forming up when I call two minutes, please
- Any questions?

I've not had captains try to talk to me at an opponent's PK, but it seems like a good preventative measure to mention.

a referee not admitting he called it wrong by confusing all around, hoping play has moved on somewhat!
